Equitation

Equitation often refers to a rider’s ability to ride correctly as well as position while mounted on a horse. In competition the horses are not judged but instead the riders are evaluated. Different classes include equitation, rider, and horsemanship.

During competition judging covers the control of the horse, the rider’s performance, correct form, proper attire, and use of riding aids. Usually other factors such as rider poise, equipment, cleanliness and polish of the horse are also evaluated. While technically the horse is not being judged, if it performs poorly that does reflect on the rider’s ability.

Qualifications of a good equitation rider include; balance with the horse, correct position in every gait and movement, and possess a commanding but relaxed ability to direct the horse with almost invisible aids.
